This was good -- I like seeing Sam's damage through his own broken sensations, and his wry sense of humor about it, and his fatalism that is just this side of optimism: He was beaten, broken, and probably sitting in his own piss with a possibly bleeding head wound. Some bastard had seen him and legged it, and he was relying on some kids to raise the alarm. But on the bright side it wasn’t raining.
I, too, really like the ambiguity of what happened. Was it about a case? Personal grudge? Was Sam tortured, raped, or just beat up? He was gone for a while, anything is possible, and that darkens the tone evocatively and really lends a strong undercurrent to what Gene tells him...and what he doesn't. Awesome! Thanks!
