1. He never really had aspirations of being a Captain and when forced to take command of the Enterprise whilst Commander Tucker he had a few shaky moments before settling into his stride.
2. Having been undecided about his belief in God for most of his life a tiny part of him spent a good majority of the fight with the people both fearing and hoping for the existence of some higher power. Fearing it because how could a God let all these good men and women die and at the same time hoping for some divine intervention to get them out of this before more people died. Following the attack he spent a good amount of time in sickbay and after seeing one good man die and another get pulled back from death he remains undecided.
