Therefore Gene Hunt and the team in Manchester will have moved on to some degree. Therefore if we take the somewhat supernatural route, then the past timeline is a construct not quite separate to our own reality (a kind of heaven, as described on another board) and comatose/dead people from this world get to enter and interact with this second world. Therefore the "sexy and intelligent" (*gag*) DCI of the new series enters the same world but at a different point in its timeline.
Have you read the "Everworld" series by K.A. Applegate? Similar theme to what I've said above. I think you'd like it :)
